Is it a Goose, Is it a Turkey, Is it a Tree Frog… No Its Felix and He is 1 Month!

So our son sounds like a honking goose, eats like a turkey and likes to sleep like a little tree frog.

 

Felix is so much louder than his sister ever was he is constantly making noises his favorite sounds like a honking goose. It is rather disconcerting… Felix is particularly noisy while being fed, feeding results in all sort of noise, including chittering like a chipmunk, sighing and of course the honking… Is this a boy thing or just a Felix thing? He also continues to fart up a storm too, which adds to the symphony.

 

Next, he eats like a turkey, meaning that I don’t think he knows when to stop and I think one day I am going to walk into his room and he will have exploded. One day last week he ate so much in a day that had to call my friend Andrea, who does nutrition stuff for premature babies, to ensure there wasn’t something wrong with the kid. She has confirmed that all is normal, though I still think he is eating crazy amounts! It also follows that with the crazy eating he is also growing like mad, I took him to the doctor yesterday and his weigh has increased from 7lb 15oz last visit to 11lb 9oz this visit. That is a jump from 50^th percentile to 90^th!  That is nuts! His head also seems to be getting bigger, it has grown 4cm.

 

Now for the tree frog thing, this doesn’t seem like a big deal, it is actually pretty cute. Felix loves sleeping on our chest with his legs all curled up, this is great when you are holding him but this also transfers to how he likes to sleep in his crib… on his stomach that is… This would have been great if it was back when I was a baby and the current approved sleep position to reduce the risk of SIDS was tummy sleeping but now it is back but Mr. Felix doesn’t seem to agree. For the most part he is okay with sleeping on his back but when he is fussy the only way to get him sleeping is on his stomach. We are still trying to get him to sleep on his back but we go back and forth.

 

Speaking of sleeping he isn’t doing too bad, he is pretty consistent with waking up three to four hours between feeds, this results in a feed before bed, on in the middle of the night and one early in the morning. It isn’t great but it isn’t too bad.

 

This month has been pretty busy for us, what with being born… This time round I have learned to take advantage of this first month where he will sleep anywhere and always. We have been very busy in fact I don’t think we have spent one full day at home since Jeff has gone back to work. I totally lucked out with the weather the first week on my own, it was beautiful and we got out for walks almost everyday. WE have had a lot of fun with John, Denise and my mom as well as Heather, Cam and Leigh.

 

Amelia continues to be VERY good with Felix, always wanting to hold him and feed him or help us change him. I hope this last for awhile. She is sure a great big sister.

Halloween 2008

In order to kick off Halloween, we stuck with tradition and heading out to John and Denise the Sunday before Halloween to carve our pumpkins and theirs… Jeff and I each did one and then Amelia designed while Jeff did the impementation, for those of you that know Amelia’s love of cupcakes you won’t ahve a problem guessing which is hers…

Unfortunatly I didn’t get a very good picture of Jeff’s pumpkin…

 

 

 

This was the first year that Amelia was really into Halloween, it made it so much more fun. Amelia want through a wide gamut of potential costumes, ballerina, dragon, princess, bug girl, and kitty cat… when she said kitty cat I jumped on it and ran out and got a costume before she could change her mind. My mom had got a little lady bug costume for Felix for Halloween.

 

(If anyone is wondering what it up with Jeff and why he has a cane, no he didn’t injure himself, he dressed up for halloween as House. He went out to a Halloween Party with friends but was a trooper and came home to take over the 2am feeding.)

 

Last year Amelia was rather timid about trick or treating, until we hooked up with Ronan and then she loosened up and it was good times. Given the success of the Amelia and Ronan combo last year, decided to do it again this year. Leigh, Rob and Ronan’s neighborhood is great for trick or treating so we headed down there and were also joined by Heather, Adam, Cam and the pups.

 

Halloween turned out to be a beautiful evening, yipeee!!!  Our Halloween Kitty and Scooby Doo (Ronan) took the Norseman hood by storm, after the parents prepared them selves with a glass of wine at the Mitchell house. They hit only about 4 blocks but managed to fill their bags. Amelia was the opposite of last year, last year she hung back and would follow Ronan up to each house, this year she was running a head and with some prompting from us was saying trick or treat. Both kids had a great time. The only house Amelia would not go to was this one house that was all decorated up with a dry ice machine, life size witch flying around the roof top and a zombie in the driveway, she made it up the driveway but then turned around and waited on the sidewalk for Ronan.

 

Felix was a very quiet little bug strapped into the Baby Bjorn. He woke up for a quick bottle and then hit the hay again. If only he knew about all the treats he was missing out on, the milk would not have seemed so appealing.

 

Prior to Halloween I had a talk with Amelia about not eating too much candy cause it can make you sick and give you cavities, I think her school also had a similar talk. Anyways when we got home from trick or treating Amelia informed US that she was only allowed to have one candy a day so she didn’t get any cavities. I was very impressed, she has much more self restraint with her Halloween candy than I do, as I have been exceeding the one candy per day rule she set. Luckily we have different taste in candy, she likes lollipops and I like chocolate.

 

 

Week Two

Well we are still hanging in there. Felix continues to be a pretty relaxed baby. We have sorted out the sleeping the crib issue and he is pretty content in his crib, though a sure fire way of settling him down is to let him sleep on you chest like a little tree frog. He has started to become abit more fussy after night and the last few night has been cluster feeding from about 11 to 1am which is abit trying luckily the other two feeding during the night at 3 and 6am are quick and he is just awake long enough to gulp down some milk then back to sleep.

 

That last few days Felix has been eating like mad!! It seems he polishes off one bottle when he wants to start another. Although Felix has been much more agreeable with the whole breastfeeding thing than Amelia was but I still find it tough. So far, I have been switching back and forth between pumping with bottle feeding and breastfeeding, so far it is working pretty well.

 

Jeff has been home this week and we have been enjoying some family time. Last Friday, Amelia played hookie form school and Denise and I hook her shopping for new shoes, when we all went out for lunch, Felix and Jeff included. This Thursday Jeff, Felix and I went for lunch in West Queen West and then did abit of shopping, though it was crisp it was a beautiful sunny fall/winter day. Amelia has been in school most of this week but has been going happily but the first thing she wants to do when we pick her up is to say hi to Felix and give him a kiss, she is still very besotted with her brother.

 

We have also had a number of visitors dropping in to sneak a peak Mr. Felix. He wasn’t quite as interested though and I don’t think anyone, family included has seen his eye opened. J Even my grandfather stopped into town and enjoyed a Sunday family dinner with us at John and Denise and met Mr. Felix.

 

Monday Jeff goes back to work, we did abit of a trail and he went in for a few hours on Friday, all went well and although I will miss having Jeff at home me I think I am much better prepared for doing it on my own this time.
