Introducing Felix Fraser Reitsma
Yah!! He is here and almost a week old!!! As expected he came into the world Friday morning, October 17th at 9:13am, weighing in at 8lbs 6oz. I must say the schedule c-section was very civilized, the only problem is when you are in no pain at all it make it much more nerve racking preparing yourself for the pain you know is about to come… Not sure that makes sense but anyway… St Joe’s was VERY efficient; we were in there at 7:30am I was prepped and ready to go by 8:45am. The staff at St. Joe’s was fantastic!
Everything went very smoothly, a stark contrast from last time. I was awake for the whole thing and I actually got to see Felix right away and got to hold him shortly after we were out of the OR. The Moms were both waiting in the recovery room and my mom was quite happy that this time I had colour in my cheers and a smile on my face and I didn’t look like a car accident victim. Unfortunately although I was doing quite well, Mr. Felix had abit of drama, his temp was low and he wasn’t warming up even with some snuggles from me, they checked his blood sugar and it was very low. He ended up in NICU with a glucose IV for the first 36hrs of our hospital stay. He responded well and no one seemed overly worried about it but by the start of the second day of his being in the nursery I was going batty and I wanted my son. He did finally get transferred to our care on Saturday afternoon and his sugars were all A-Okay.
With Amelia our stay in the hospital seemed short and a giant blur, this time it seemed never ending. With no baby to care for the first day we visited him in the NICU but we actually had time to sleep, read and visit, I was feeling abit useless. We were all happy to be discharged on Sunday morning, especially Jeff who could now sleep in a real bed.
While we were in the hospital my mom stayed at our place with Amelia and they had all sorts of fun. Everyone has gone out of their way to do special things for Amelia and she is eating it up. She is in love with her baby brother, or “Her Baby” as she calls him. She has been very good about helping out and always wants to hold him and kiss him. She is very gentle with him. She is abit moody though and the tantrums are easily sparked but all in all she is dealing very well. She is still in school during the days though we usually pick her up early. On Monday morning she had a massive meltdown when Jeff dropped her off because she wanted to stay home with “Her Baby”. She did stay at school that day but as a surprise we all came to pick her up after and she got to show off her baby brother to all her friends, she was very proud.
Felix has been a great little baby so far, he is quite laid back and only gets really pissed if we are too slow feeding him or if we try to put him in his crib… this isn’t so good. The last two nights have been getting better but at first Felix would only sleep on our chests in our room and would have a fit if we put him in his crib. I didn’t realize how lucky we were with Amelia, she always liked her crib and never slept in our room, I think Felix will get there shortly but it has been a challenge. He is quite a snuggler though and for now we are all eating it up.
At first I thought Felix looks a lot like Winston Churchill, I think it was the chin… He does seem to be growing out of it though or maybe I am just not seeing it anymore. Jeff is threatening to print a picture and post it in his room for comparison.
On Tuesday, we took Felix in for his first doctors appointment with Dr. Vickers, he received a clean bill of health. He is still below his birth weight but within a reasonable amount. I am sure with all the eating and sleeping he is doing he will be back up there in no time J
Yesterday, Jeff and I took Felix to Sherway for abit of shopping. It was nice to get out and join the world but after walking around for a few hours I was bagged and pretty sore last night. I think I will have to ease up abit.
